Tujuan teks naratif memang bisa lebih dari satu. Teks ini merupakan teks yang unik di pangkuan pembacanya. Ada banyak keinginan yang digantungkan kepada teks ini, misalnya saja, dengan membaca teks naratif seseorang ingin mendapatkan hiburan (entertainment), nilai-nilai moral (moral value), atau untuk mempermainkan/menggerakkan emosi (emotion game).

Macam-macam Narrative Text:

1. Dongeng (fairy tale)
2. Cerita rakyat (folk tale)
3. Legenda (legend)
4. Cerita binatang (fable), dan cerita rekaan lainnya.

Hal penting kedua,  generic structure atau stuktur teks, yaitu:

1. Orientation: bagian awal yang berisi pengenalan tokoh, setting tempat dan waktu, dan awalan  masuk ke tahap berikutnya. Contoh:

Once upon a time, there lived a sparrow with her husband on a tree. She had built a nice nest and laid eggs in it.

2. Complication: bagian ini tokoh utama berhadapan dengan masalah (problem). Bagian ini menjadi inti teks naratif; harus ada. Jika tidak ada masalah, masalah harus diciptakan. Contoh:

One morning, a wild elephant was in search of shade and he arrived at the tree. However, soon he became angry and shook the tree hard. He didn’t find enough shade.

Down came all the sparrow eggs and broke one by one. But both parents were saved. The mother sparrow was very sad.

3. Resolution: bagian ini merupakan kelanjutan dari complication, yaitu pemecahan masalah. Masalah harus diselesaikan dengan cara yang kreatif. Contoh:

The woodpecker, a friend of hers, offered to help her think of a way to kill the elephant.

The woodpecker flew to her friend, the gnat, which in turn went to the wise frog for advice. The frog devised a scheme for killing the elephant.

The frog asked the gnat to buzz in the ears of the elephant, so that the elephant would be thrilled to listen to the music of the gnat and close its eyes. Then, he asked the woodpecker to peck the elephant’s eyes out. He himself would be on the edge of a pit and would croak misleading the elephant to think that it was a pond.

4. Re-orientation: bagian penutup. Seperti dalam recount, orientation berisi gambaran perasaan tokoh atau penulis, atau kesimpulan tentang cerita. Contoh:

The next day at noon the three animals carried out the plan and the elephant was killed when he fell flat into a pit after being blinded by the woodpecker when he closed his eyes in response to the gnat. So the revenge was taken with collective wit of all three animals.

Tense yang digunakan

 Secara logika, sebenarnya kita bisa menebak. Semua teks narrative pasti terjadi pada masa lampau (in the past), sehingga tense atau kata kerja yang digunakan ialah past tense. Perhatikan kata kerja yang dicetak merah.

Features (ciri-ciri)

Untuk tingkat SMP, teks naratif yang dipelajari adalah teks naratif sederhana. Paragrafnya masih linier, simple dan sesuai dengan aturan baku. Biasanya, narative di buka dengan frasa seperti di bawah ini.

Recount text adalah jenis teks yang digunakan untuk menceritakan pengalaman, peristiwa-peristiwa yang sudah terjadi pada masa lampau, pengalaman berlibur, sejarah, atau sejarah hidup seseorang. Recount text juga digunakan untuk menceritakan pengalaman seseorang yang lucu.

Jadi, tujuan komunikatif teks recount adalah to tell the past event.

Karena digunakan untuk menceritakan the past event, recount text menggunakan simple past tense. The simple past tense adalah bentuk kata kerja yang digunakan untuk menceritakan kejadian yang sudah lewat.

 Contoh:

Last week I went to Bali for holiday

Yesterday my brother bought a new laptop computer

My father rode his new schwinn recumbent bike yesterday

 Perhatikan kata kerja yang bercetak merah. Kata itu adalah verb (kata kerja) berbentuk past tense.

 Events

They boarded a large Boeing flight. The flight was nearly fourteen hours. On the plane the cabin crews were very friendly. They gave them news paper and magazine to read. They gave them food and drink. There was a film for their entertainment. They had a very pleasant flight.

They slept part of the way. On arrival at Heathrow Airport, they had to go to Customs and Immigration. The officers were pleasant. They checked the document carefully but their manners were very polite. Mr. Richard and his family collected their bags and went to London Welcome Desk.

They arranged the transfer to a hotel. The hotel was a well-known four-star hotel. The room had perfect view of the park. The room had its own bathroom and toilet. Instead of keys for the room, they inserted a key-card to open the door. On the third floor, there was a restaurant serving Asian and European food. They had a variety of food.

 Re-orientation

 The two weeks in London went by fast. At the end of the 14-day, they were quite tired but they felt very happy.

Orientation membahas who(siapa), what (apa), when (kapan waktunya), dan where (di mana waktunya). Siapa yang pergi berlibur. Siapa melakukan apa. Siapa melakukan apa  di mana dan kapan waktunya. Orientation merupakan pijakan pertama dan sekaligus menjadi pengantar cerita.

Events adalah peristiwa-peristiwa yang terjadi dalam peristiwa itu. Kalian dapat menempatkan satu event untuk setiap paragraf.

Re-orientation berisi kesimpulan, atau ungkapan perasaan penulisnya, atau tanggapan personal, atau pendapat penulis tentang peristiwa yang diceritakan.

Untuk siswa SMP contoh teks recount yang paling sering digunakan adalah menceritakan kembali pengalaman pergi berlibur (holiday).

Pada artikel sebelumnya saya sudah membagi tentang bocoran pertanyaan untuk soal-soal tentang menentukan gambaran umum sebuah teks. Sekarang saya akan melanjutkan tentang menentukan gambaran rinci (detailed information)

Sebelumnya saya akan berikan gambaran atau definisi sederhana tentang apa itu informasi rinci (detailed information). Informasi rinci dapat dijabarkan sebagai berikut.

1. Yaitu pertanyaan yang jawabannya berupa informasi yang tertulis dalam teks tetapi keberadaannya tersebar di sana sini dalam teks tersebut.

 2. Salah satu ciri pertanyaan tentang informasi ini adalah menggunakan kata tanya  WHY dan HOW.

Ciri lain soal menentukan informasi rinci adalah pertanyaan biasanya terdapat pada informasi utama, sementara jawabannya ada pada informasi penjelas.

Perhatikan contoh di bawah ini.

Jawabnya: by airplane

 Penjelasan:

Rina pergi ke Bangkok adalah informasi utama, sedangkan ia ke sana naik pesawat terbang adalah informasi penjelas.

 Contoh lain:

Some bees are as small as 0.08 inch (2 millimeters). Some bees are as big as 1.6 inches (4 centimeters). Bees come in many colors – black, gray, yellow, red, green, or blue. Most bees live alone. They are called solitary bees. Some bees live in groups called colonies. They are social bees.

Perhatikan teks di atas. Pertanyaan “Mengapa lebah atau tawon disebut makhluk penyendiri (solitary)” sesungguhnya menanyakan informasi utama dan jawabannya diambil dari kalimat penjelas. Begitu juga pertanyaan kedua “Mengapa lebah disebut makhluk social” juga menanyakan informasi utama, dan jawabannya terdapat dalam kalimat penjelas. Pertanyaan ketiga juga sama.

Ciri khas pertanyaan menentukan informasi rinci adalah sebagai berikut. Mohon diperhatikan betul.

Tips menyelesaikan pertanyaan menentukan informasi rinci:

1. Baca pertanyaan lebih dulu.
2. Baca teks seluruhnya secara hati-hati.
3. Tentukan kalimat yang mengandung informasi utama yang ditanyakan.
4. Temukan kalimat penjelasnya, sebab, kalimat penjelas itulah yang biasanya menjadi jawaban.

Jadi, teks recount adalah jenis teks yang biasa digunakan untuk menceritakan peristiwa atau pengalaman seseorang yang terjadi pada masa lalu (in the past) dan biasanya peristiwa tersebut  disusun secara berurutan. Dalam teks recount, penulis sering menggunakan kata I atau we untuk menceritakan pengalamannya.

Struktur (generic structure) teks ini terdiri atas tiga elemen:

1. orientation (setting), bercerita kepada pembaca tentang siapa saja yang terlibat dalam peristiwa tersebut, tempat peristiwa berlangsung, dan kapan peristiwa itu terjadi;
2. events (kejadian), menceritakan peristiwa yang terjadi secara berurutan;
3. re-orientaion; memberikan ringkasan atau kesimpulan dari peristiwa yang diceritakan.

Teks recount bertujuan memberikan gambaran (deskripsi) kepada pembaca apa yang terjadi dan mengapa peristiwa itu terjadi.

Ciri-ciri kebahasan (language feature) teks recount adalah:

1. kata ganti orang atau benda (proper noun) untuk mengetahui siapa atau apa yang terlibat dalam teks.
2. descriptive word untuk menggambarkan secara rinci siapa, apa, kapan, di mana, dan bagaimana.
3. menggunakan past tense untuk menceritakan periatiwa yang telah lewat
4. kata-kata yang menunjukkan urutan peristiwa (contoh, first, next, then).

Termasuk dalam jenis teks recount adalah sejarah (history) biografi seorang tokoh, reportasesuratkabar, atau catatan/laporan saksi mata.

Teks procedure (Procedure Text) adalah jenis teks yang menggambarkan atau menjelaskan cara mencapai sesuatu melalui langkah-langkah atau tahapan yang berurutan. Teks ini menerangkan bagaimana seseorang menampilkan serangkaian proses yang berbeda-beda.

Teks procedure biasanya menggunakan simple present tense, dan  menggunakan kalimat perintah (imperative sentence). Selain itu, teks ini juga biasa menggunakan temporal conjunction, misalnya first, second, then, next, dan sebagainya.

Procedure text memiliki kerangka atau struktur  (generic structure) sebagai berikut.

1. Aim/Goal (or title), yaitu tujuan (atau judul)

2. Material, yaitu bahan atau segala sesuatu yang dibutuhkan. Tetapi tidak semua teks procedure mengandung material. Jadi, material ini sifatnya optional atau boleh dihilangkan.

3. Steps, yaitu langkah-langkah atau  tahapan untuk mencapai tujuan.

 Karena material tidak selalu ada dalam teks procedure, bisa jadi generic structure hanya terdiri atas aim/goal dan diikuti oleh steps.

Tujuan (purpose) teks ini ialah memberikan menjelaskan bagaimana sesuatu itu dicapai, dilakukan, dibuat, atau dioperasikan.

Kata kerja (tense) yang biasa digunakan adalah simple present tense dan kalimat perintah (imperative sentence).

Seseuai dengan teks, air dingin (cold water) yang kita butuhkan adalah 200 ml. Jawaban A salah, karena 250 ml adalah jumlah air mendidih (boiling water).

Saya bingung, apa yang pantas saya sampaikan untuk Bapak dan Ibu Guru?

Alah, saya lalu ingat sesuatu. Suatu ketika saya dikasih tahu seorang teman bahwa ada freeware bagus yang cocok sekali buat pembelajaran berbasib web. Nama freeware tersebut adalah hotpotatoes alias kentang panas. Nama unik, ya.

Aplikasi ini bisa digunakan secara offline dan online. Artinya, baik tanpa atau ada koneksi ke internet, hot potatoes tetap bisa digunakan. Menariknya, hotpotatoes ini dapat digunakan untuk menyajikan soal pilihan ganda (multiple choice), jawaban singkat (short-answer), kalimat acak (jumbled-sentence), teka-teki silang (crossword), menjodohkan/mengurutkan (matching/ordering), dan mengisi pertanyaan rumpang (gap-fill exercises) berbasis World Wide Web.

The Hot Potatoes suite includes six applications, enabling you to create interactive multiple-choice, short-answer, jumbled-sentence, crossword, matching/ordering and gap-fill exercises for the World Wide Web. Hot Potatoes is freeware, and you may use it for any purpose or project you like. It is not open-source.

Tenses are one of the most difficult subjects in English learning, and they can be really confusing for some people. Shall we use the past simple or the past perfect tense when talking about an action that occurred before another? Or when we say that we are doing something, is it present perfect or present continuous?

English Tenses Quizzes is a program that allows users to practice and improve their understanding of the nuances and subtleties in these grammatical elements. As the program’s name implies, it features 10 sets of quizzes, each containing three to four levels, all of them intended to help you practice and study tenses and the differences among them. All the quizzes are timed, so you only have 10 minutes to answer the 10 multiple-chioce questions of each quiz. Each time you answer a question, you can submit your answer to know if it is right or wrong, or you can complete the quiz and let the program give you your global score. If you choose the last option, you can then review the entire quiz to learn your wrong answers, if any. Also, you can print each page of the quiz and show/hide the question list.

Sofware tense ( tenses software ) ini akan membantu kita mempelajari English tenses yang sering kita jumpai dalam komunikasi menggunakan bahasa Inggris atau mempelajari descriptive text, report text, recount, narrative, atau procedure text. Tenses adalah bentuk kata kerja ( verb ) yang dikaitkan dengan waktu atau time. Belajar tenses merupakan hal paling penting dalam bahasa Inggris, sekaligus menjadi materi paling sulit bagi siswa. Hal ini bisa dimaklumi karena dalam bahasa Indonesia mereka tidak mengenal tenses. Kata kerja (verb) dalam bahasa Indonesia tidak pernah dikait-kaitkan dengan waktu (past, present, atau future).

Perhatikan contoh berikut:

Bahasa Indonesia:

Kemarin saya dan adik saya bermain sepak bola.

Saya dan adik saya bermain sepak bola setiap hari.

Saya dan adik saya sedang bermain sepak bola sekarang.

Besok pagi saya dan adik saya akan bermain sepak bola.

Perhatikan kata kerja bermain dalam kalimat di atas. Kata kerja tersebut tidak mengalami perubahan bentuk meskipun digunakan untuk menunjuk waktu kemarin, setiap hari, sekarang, dan besok pagi. Penanda waktu ditunjukkan dengan keterangan waktu seperti kemarin, setiap hari, sekarang, dan besok pagi tanpa diikuti perubahan bentuk kata kerja. Bahasa Indonesia tidak mengenal tenses.

Bahasa Inggris:

My brother and I played football yesterday.

My brother and I play football every day.

My brother and I are playing football now.

My brother and I are going to play football tomorrow.

Perhatikan kata kerja play dalam kalimat di atas. Kata kerja tersebut mengalami perubahan bentuk jika digunakan untuk menunjuk waktu kemarin, setiap hari, sekarang, dan besok pagi. Perhatikan kata kerja dan keterangan waktu di bawah ini.

played berpasangan dengan yesterday

play berpasangan dengan every day

are playing berpasangan dengan now

are going to play berpasangan dengan tomorrow

Dari contoh di atas dapat diamati bahwa bentuk played (play+ed) digunakan untuk menunjuk waktu lampau (past), bentuk play dan are playing digunakan untuk menunjuk waktu saat ini (present), bentuk are going to play digunakan untuk menunjuk waktu yang akan dating (future).

Makna kalimat akan kacau kalau pasangan kata kerja dan keterangan waktunya diubah, misalnya play dengan yesterday.

My brother and I play football yesterday.

(Maksudnya gimana? Present atau past?) Nah…
